How to Find Your MacBook Model Number (A-Number) in 10 Seconds

How to Find Your MacBook Model Number (A-Number) in 10 Seconds

Before you buy a replacement screen or battery, you need your MacBook's model number — the code that starts with "A", such as A2337 or A2681. MacBooks that look almost identical can use completely different parts, so this one detail saves you from ordering the wrong item.

Method 1: read the bottom case (fastest)

  1. Shut down the MacBook and close the lid.
  2. Turn it over. Near the hinge you'll see a line of very small text.
  3. Look for "Model A" followed by four digits — for example Model A2337.

Tip: the print is tiny. Use your phone camera to zoom in, or take a photo and enlarge it.

Method 2: check in macOS

If you can't read the bottom case, macOS can tell you the model name and year:

  1. Click the Apple menu → About This Mac. You'll see a name such as "MacBook Air (M1, 2020)".
  2. For extra certainty, hold Option and choose Apple menu → System Information. Under Hardware Overview, note the Model Identifier.
