MacBook Air A2337 (M1) Screen Replacement: What You Need to Know
The MacBook Air M1 (model A2337, 2020) is one of the most popular Macs in Australia — and a cracked or failed screen is one of its most common repairs. This guide explains how to confirm your model, the difference between replacing the full assembly and the LCD only, and what the job involves.
1. Confirm you have an A2337
Check the small print on the bottom case near the hinge — it should read "Model A2337". In macOS, About This Mac shows "MacBook Air (M1, 2020)". The Intel MacBook Air from 2020 (A2179) looks very similar, so always check the number. Step-by-step: find your model number.
2. Common signs the screen has failed
- Cracks, or black ink-like patches spreading from a point of impact
- Coloured lines, flickering or a white or black screen
- An external monitor works but the built-in display doesn't — a strong sign the display itself is faulty
3. Full assembly or LCD only?
On the A2337 the LCD panel sits inside a thin aluminium lid. Replacing only the panel means separating bonded parts, which takes time and can damage the new LCD. A complete screen assembly arrives with the panel, hinges and display cables already fitted, so the repair is quicker and the result is cleaner. It also replaces bent hinges or a dented lid at the same time.
4. What the replacement involves (overview)
- Shut down the Mac and unplug the charger.
- Remove the bottom case screws (pentalobe screwdriver).
- Disconnect the battery before touching any other connector.
- Disconnect the display cable and the other cables that run from the lid through the hinge area.
- Support the lid, remove the hinge screws (Torx) and lift the old screen away.
- Fit the new assembly, reconnect the cables, and reconnect the battery last.
- Test before closing up: image, brightness, camera, and that the Mac sleeps when you close the lid.
We recommend installation by an experienced technician — the connectors are small and easy to damage. If the Mac doesn't sleep when the lid closes, check the lid sensor cable and magnet orientation.
