5 Signs Your MacBook Air Battery Needs Replacing

MacBook Air batteries wear out gradually. These are the signs that it's time for a replacement — and how to check your battery's health in a minute.

1. macOS says "Service Recommended"

Open System Settings → Battery and look at Battery Health. "Service Recommended" means the battery can no longer hold a normal charge.

2. High cycle count

Hold Option and choose Apple menu → System Information → Power. Under Health Information you'll see the Cycle Count. Apple rates modern MacBook batteries for up to 1000 cycles.

3. Battery life has dropped sharply

If a full charge now lasts only a fraction of what it used to, the battery has lost capacity.

4. Unexpected shutdowns

A Mac that turns off at 20–30% or under load, then starts again on the charger, often has a worn battery.

5. Swelling: trackpad or case problems

A trackpad that stops clicking, a bottom case that lifts, or a laptop that rocks on a flat table can mean the battery is swelling. Stop using the Mac, don't charge it, and have the battery replaced.

Which battery do I need?

For the MacBook Air 13.6-inch M2 (A2681) and 13-inch M3 (A3113), the replacement is the A2669 battery — brand new, 0 cycles, 54 Wh. Not sure of your model? Find your model number.
